SUGGESTED ITINERARIES

Below you will find suggested itineraries for the Harrison, Arkansas area that you can enjoy.  Whether you are interested in the outdoor activities of the Ozark Mountains and Buffalo National River, a tour of the many unique attractions, an exhilerating motorcycle ride through the Ozark Mountains or a leisurely drive along scenic roads and vistas, Harrison, AR is the place to start your trip.  We have suggested these Ozark tours from our experiences, but we can also customize a tour just for you and your family in mind.

 

Outdoor Adventure Two-Day Tour

Day One

6:00 AM    Gaither Mountain Sunrise- Rise early for an Ozarks’ sunrise on top of Gaither Mountain.  The view from the overlook is fantastic and anyone visiting the area should be sure to see it.  You might have to rise early, but it will be well worth the trouble.

Twin Falls located south of Harrison AR7:00 AM    Hike to Twin Falls at Camp Orr- Twin Falls, also known as Triple Falls (in high water times there are three distinct falls), is known as one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Ozarks.  An extremely short hike from the Camp Orr Boy Scout camp will take you to this Ozarks’ treasure.  In the summer months, be sure to bring the kid's bathing suits along because the pool below the falls is perfect for kids and adults to play.  Twin Falls makes you feel like you've stepped onto the set of a motion picture!

 


Hawks Bill Crag south of Harrison, AR10:30 AM    Hike to Hawk’s Bill Crag- Be sure to bring a picnic lunch along for this amazing hike through the Ozark forest on route to Hawk’s Bill Crag.  The Crag, also named Whittaker Point, is the most photographed point in Arkansas and has been featured on the cover of tour guides and Rand McNally maps.  The hike is leisurely and easy with very few steep grades.  Well worth the trip!

Upper Falls on Lost Valley Trail south of Harrison, AR3:00 PM    Hike the Lost Valley Trail- This trail is very easy and beautiful!  Part of the trail is handicap accessible and leads to waterfalls, Indian cliff overhangs and a cave with a waterfall inside.  You don’t want to miss out on seeing the marvelous natural features of the Ozarks that are found on this trail.  The trail is perfect for young children and elderly adults.

5:00 PM    Overnight at one of Harrison’s many lodging establishments and enjoy one of Harrison's fine restaurants.

 

Day Two

Arkansas Elk Herd south of Harrison, AR7:00 AM    Ozarks’ Elk Herd- Just south of Harrison, a elk herd of over 500 head has been reintroduced to the Ozark Mountains and Buffalo River area.  A trip to Boxley Valley, south of Ponca, offers an opportunity to view a elk herd in its natural setting.  The best time to view the herd is in the early morning or late afternoon but in the fall and winter months you can see them most of the day.  Over 25,000 people viewed the elk herd last year in the fields along the highway just south of Harrison.

9:00 AM    Elk Education Centers- There are two education centers located in the area; one in Ponca and one in Jasper.  Both offer a unique look at the elk herd that has grown in the Ozarks.  Stop in and find out detailed information about the herd and their habitat.

10:00 AM    Float the Buffalo National River- The best way to experience the grandeur of the Buffalo National River is toBuffalo River Canoeing south of Harrison, AR float it by canoe.  There are many outfitters on the river that can set you up to view all the wildlife, scenic bluffs and the exciting adventures of the river.  Floating is normally slow with few large rapids, so it is perfect for the whole family!

5:00 PM    Return to Harrison for a warm bed and shower after an amazing day in the outdoors!


Attractions of the Ozarks Itinerary


Mystic Caverns located south of Harrison, AR8:30 AM    Mystic Caverns- Start your day with a visit to Mystic Caverns and enjoy two unique caves in one tour.  Learn about the history and creation of the caverns along with the Ozarks themselves. 

 

10:30 AM    Shopping on the Historic Downtown SquareWith a growing number of shops located in and around our downtown square, it is becoming a very vibrant experience for visitors from all around.  From the old time candy store to the new fashion clothing store the shops are diverse, friendly, and easy on the wallet.

12:00 PM    Lunch at one of Harrison’s dining establishments.

Boone County Heritage Museum located in Harrison, AR1:00 PM    Boone County Heritage Museum- The Museum chronicles the history of Boone County and Harrison, Arkansas from the earliest settlers to our more modern history.  Located in the original historic Harrison High School building, BCHM is open Monday- Friday, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

 

2:30 PM    Ozarks Medieval Fortress- A team of architectural experts, working together with historians of the Middle AgesOzark Medieval Fortress located north of Harrison, AR and dedicated artisans, are raising a genuine, full-sized, fortified castle, with 45 foot high towers, a drawbridge, and 6 foot wide stone walls surrounding an expansive inner courtyard, using the materials, techniques, and rules of the 13th century.  Be sure to witness and be a part of this historic attraction!

5:00 PM    Return to Harrison for dinner and overnight stay.


Two-Day Motorcycle Tour through the Ozarks

Day One

8:00 AM    Moonshine Run- Depart Harrison traveling south on Highway 7 to enjoy the Moonshine Run.  This route is extremely scenic and curvy with 662 curves in the 110 mile route.Motorcycle Riding in Harrison, AR

12:00 PM    Lunch in Harrison at one of our many restaurants.

1:00 PM    Bull Shoals Dam Route- A popular route that takes you east from Harrison above Bull Shoals Lake and over the Bull Shoals Dam.  Be sure to stop at the James Gaston Visitors Center to learn about the lake and its history.

4:00 PM    Overnight in one of Harrison’s lodging establishments.

Day Two

8:00 AM    Peel’s Ferry Route- When the White River was flooded to form Bull Shoals Lake, the water covered Highway 125 that went into Missouri.  To leave access, a ferry system was developed at Peel to bring vehicles across the lake.  A wonderful route that has become extremely popular for motorcyclists.Moonshine Run Motorcycle Route south of Harrison, AR

11:00 AM    Enjoy Branson’s wonderful attractions and shopping.

2:00 PM    Eureka Springs Backroads Route- Eureka Springs is America’s Victorian Village and when in the Ozarks it is a great location to visit.  Take this scenic route to Eureka Springs and enjoy the quaint town for a few hours.

6:00 PM    Overnight in one of Harrison’s lodging establishments.


Fall Colors Tour

Fall Colors at Maplewood Cemetery in Harrison, AR6:00 AM    Gaither Mountain Sunrise- Rise early for an Ozarks’ sunrise on top of Gaither Mountain.  The view from the overlook is fantastic and anyone visiting the area should be sure to see it.  You might have to rise early, but it will be well worth the trouble.

8:00 AM    Maplewood Cemetery- No trip to Harrison in the fall is complete without visiting Maplewood Cemetery and viewing over 500 mature maple trees.  The park explodes with color and is a top destination for fall color viewing.

9:00 AM    Ozark Mountain Driving Tour- Travel south out of Harrison on the Moonshine Run that takes you through some of the most beautiful and deepest parts of the Ozarks.  The route takes you past scenic points such as the Grand Canyon of the Ozarks, Sam’s Thrown and Boxley Valley.  Be sure to detour off the route a bit at Ponca and visit Steel Creek on the Buffalo National River.

12:00 PM    Picnic to Hawks Bill Crag or Lost Valley- Two wonderful trails with great color and scenic views.  Bring a picnic lunch along and see beautiful color on two of the most popular and famous trails in the Ozarks.  Both are easy hikes and provide many opportunities to enjoy the fall season in the Ozark Mountains.

5:00 PM    Overnight at one of Harrison’s lodging establishments.
